Essential Galapagos Ferry Recommendations
When arriving in the Galapagos Islands and traveling by speed boat between islands, keep the following advice in mind for a smooth journey.
Important: Arrive at the pier 1 hour before departure. Luggage check-in takes place 30 minutes before boarding.
Motion Sickness Tip: Take motion sickness medication approximately 30 to 60 minutes before departure. Sea conditions vary and waters can get choppy, especially from July to November.
- Book in advance: Purchase your ferry tickets at least 3 days ahead of time. Boats have limited seating capacity and fill up rapidly during peak travel months.
- Arrive 1 hour early: Baggage inspection by Biosecurity (ABG) and check-in occurs 30 minutes prior to departure.
- Port Cash Fees: Have small USD bills ready for water taxi fees ($1.00 USD at Puerto Ayora, $1.50 USD at Isabela) and Isabela Island entry tax ($10.00 USD per foreign visitor).
- Seasonal Sea Conditions: From January to June, sea conditions are generally calmer. From July to December, the Humboldt Current brings cooler waters and choppier seas.
- Islands Served by Ferries: Public ferries only operate between populated islands (Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal, Isabela, and Floreana). Uninhabited islands require booking day tours or cruises.
- No Direct San Cristóbal ↔ Isabela Ferries: Ferries between San Cristóbal and Isabela require a stopover and transfer in Santa Cruz.
- Luggage Weight Limit: Each passenger is allowed 1 large bag up to 20 kg (44 lbs) plus 1 backpack up to 5 kg (11 lbs). Extra luggage incurs a fee between $10 and $15 USD.
- Seating Strategy: Sitting towards the rear (closer to the outboard engines) provides a smoother ride with less pitching from waves than sitting at the front.
- Protect Your Valuables: Keep travel documents, passports, electronics, and wallet inside waterproof bags or dry sacks inside your carry-on bag. Spray and sea mist can splash aboard.
